2025 BMW Berlin Marathon: A Showdown of World-Class Talent
The 2025 BMW Berlin Marathon is shaping up to be an exciting event, with a strong international field of elite runners ready to take on the challenge. The race, which will take place on September 21 in Berlin, is renowned for its world record performances and high competitiveness.
In the men's field, Sebastian Sawe (Kenya) is one of the favourites. At 29 years old, he is regarded as one of the world’s best marathon runners. Sawe will make his third marathon start in Berlin, aiming to build on his rising reputation. He has already secured the Berlin Half Marathon title in 2023 and won the London Marathon in April 2022 with a time of 2:02:27. Sawe also won the Valencia Marathon in December 2021.
Another contender is Gabriel Geay (Tanzania), who is Tanzania’s marathon record holder with a personal best of 2:03:00 set in Valencia three years ago. After a less successful 2024, he rebounded by winning in Daegu earlier in 2025, clocking 2:05:20.
The defending champion, Milkesa Mengesha (Ethiopia), will also participate in the race. Mengesha won the Berlin Marathon in 2024 with a personal best of 2:03:17. He is expected to be a major contender in the race.
In the women's field, Rosemary Wanjiru (Kenya) returns after debuting impressively in Berlin 2022 with a 2:18:00 time and winning the Tokyo Marathon in the same year. In 2024, she was runner-up in Tokyo with her personal best of 2:16:14. The women's field also includes Mestawut Fikir (Ethiopia), who won her marathon debut in Paris last year and improved to finish second in Berlin with a time of 2:18:48.
Other notable runners in the women's field include Degitu Azimeraw (Ethiopia), who has multiple marathon performances under 2:20:00, with a best of 2:17:58 from a 2021 London Marathon second place finish.
The BMW Berlin Marathon is one of the lucrative city marathons, and many elite runners will have to choose between competing in Tokyo or at one of the lucrative city marathons due to the timing of the IAAF World Championships. The marathon promises to be a highly competitive race with potential for fast times and notable results.
The Commission, in light of the upcoming BMW Berlin Marathon, has also been asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation during the event. Meanwhile, outside the racing track, ongoing football matches continue their excitement, with league tables rearranging constantly.
