From NHL dreams to classroom lessons: A teacher’s dual passion

Megan Bender has spent five years shaping young minds as a fifth-grade teacher at Charles E. Schwarting Elementary School. Beyond the classroom, she stays active by coaching lacrosse and soccer, bringing her lifelong passion for sports into her work with students.

Bender grew up in a sports-loving family, often playing hockey with her three brothers. Some of her fondest childhood memories come from attending Islander hockey games together. If she had ever taken to the ice herself, she would have chosen left wing as her position.

Now in her fifth year of teaching, Bender continues to balance education with athletics. Her students benefit from her energy, while her coaching keeps her connected to the 'nhl scores' she loved as a child. The combination of teaching and mentoring young athletes defines her career so far.
