Hanover's Cup Hero Sievers Aims to Become Mayor - From Bundesliga legend to mayoral candidate: Jörg Sievers' political play

Jörg Sievers, a former Bundesliga goalkeeper, is now running for mayor of Springe, a town of 30,000 near Hanover. The CDU candidate confirmed his bid after reports first appeared in the Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung. Local elections in Lower Saxony will take place on September 13.

Sievers spent his entire professional career at Hannover 96, playing 493 matches between 1989 and 2003. One of his standout moments came in the 1992 DFB-Pokal semifinal, where he saved a penalty against Werder Bremen and later scored the winning spot-kick in a 6–5 shootout victory. That same year, he helped Hannover lift the trophy as a second-division side, saving two penalties in the final against Borussia Mönchengladbach.

After retiring, Sievers worked as a goalkeeping coach for his former club. He has also been a CDU member for years, with a long-standing interest in politics. His decision to run for mayor marks a shift from football to public service.

Sievers' candidacy adds a well-known name to Springe's mayoral race. The election on September 13 will determine whether the former footballer transitions into local leadership. His political experience and public profile could shape the campaign in the coming weeks.
