Frigid Homes and Broken Promises: Siberia’s Heating Crisis Drags On
Residents in Yemelyanovo, Krasnoyarsk Krai, are battling frigid indoor temperatures as a heating emergency persists. With outdoor thermometers plunging to -30°C (-22°F), apartments remain barely above +16°C (61°F), forcing people to resort to makeshift heating solutions.
The crisis began on January 14, 2026, when a primary heating conduit ruptured due to corrosion and wear. The Yemelyanovo Municipal Utility Company (MUP 'Teplo') and the Krasnoyarsk Krai regional heating oversight authority are blamed for the failure.
Confronted with uninhabitable conditions, locals are relying on electric heaters and even kitchen ovens to keep warm. Authorities now caution that repairs will take at least another week, leaving homes without proper heating in the extreme cold.
The extended outage leaves residents with no choice but to endure the freezing temperatures for days to come. Authorities have yet to provide a definitive timeline for full restoration, as the damaged infrastructure remains unaddressed.
