Munich in Lockdown: The 61st International Security Conference
"Friday Approach: Munich Security Conference - All Essential Information Summarized"
Mark your calendars, folks! The 61st International Security Conference, also known as SIKO, is kicking off this weekend in Munich, Germany, from February 14 to 16, 2025. Munich's city center, largely centered around the Bayerischer Hof, will be transformed into a security fortress, as heads of state and high-ranking politicians are expected to attend. Get ready for an onslaught of cops, with a whopping 5,000 officers on duty from Thursday itself!
What in Tarnation is SIKO?
SIKO is not just another boring conference — it's the granddaddy of them all! Held annually, this international powwow brings together politicians, military bigwigs, and business honchos to mumble-jumble about security-related hanky-panky outside the diplomatic and protocol shit-shows. And guess what? This year will be the swan song for dear ol' Christoph Heusgen at the helm!
The goal of SIKO is to facilitate conversations and share perspectives on current hot topics in foreign, security, and defense woes.
Who's the Cream of the Crop Attending?
Prepare to witness the who's who of the global political scene descending on Munich! Over 60 heads of state and government, more than 100 ministers, and heads of various international and civil society organizations are expected to crash the party.
Expect a star-studded lineup of confirmed attendees, including US Vice President J.D. Vance, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD), Chancellor and Spitzenkandidaten Friedrich Merz (CDU/CSU), Christian Lindner (FDP), Robert Habeck (Greens), and the conference will get kicked off on Friday, February 14, by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
topics up for Discussion
On day one, attendees will face off over global security challenges like global governance, democratic resilience, and climate security. The second day will focus on the international order, regional conflicts and crises, and the future of the transatlantic relationship. Finally, the big question of "What's Europe's role in the world?" will dominate the conversation on day three.
Street Dramas and Protests
- Shit's gonna hit the fan on Saturday, February 15, at 1 PM! The Anti-SIKO alliance "Action Alliance against the NATO Security Conference" will rally at Stachus. Protesters plan to march towards Marienplatz at 2 PM and form a human chain around the SIKO venue. The final raucous will take place at 3:30 PM at Marienplatz.
- The 23rd "Munich Peace Conference" will be held in parallel to SIKO, with an opening event on Friday evening (February 14) at the Smartvillage event location in the Arabellapark, followed by lectures and workshops on Saturday.
- No go zone around the Bayerischer Hof, access will be restricted to authorized ... well, you get it!
- Promenadeplatz will be closed from Friday morning at 6 AM to Sunday afternoon at 3 PM.
Public Transport Snafus
Due to the Munich Security Conference, the section between Karlsplatz (Stachus) and Maxmonument will be closed from Friday, February 14, at approximately 5 PM to Sunday, February 16, at approximately 4:30 PM. Stops like Lenbachplatz, Marienplatz (Theatinerstraße), Nationaltheater, and Kammerspiele will be off-limits. The exception is the bus service, which can't come to the rescue due to the extensive closures. The downturn on Tram lines 19 and 21 will go down like this:
- Tram 19 and Night Tram N19 will be rerouted between Munich Central Station South and Maxmonument via Sendlinger Tor and Isartor on the route of Tram 16. The section from Munich Central Station to Kammerspiele will be omitted.
- Tram 21 will be interrupted and only run in the sections Westfriedhof - Karlsplatz and St.-Veit-Straße - Max-Weber-Platz. The stops Lenbachplatz - Maximilianeum will be out of service. At Karlsplatz, the tram will scoot off towards Westfriedhof at the stop of line 20. Between Karlsplatz and Max-Weber-Platz, passengers can switch to U4 and U5.
Other tram and bus lines may also feel the pinch with reroutes and interruptions if additional closures are required during the security conference, such as for the arrival of participants or demonstrations.
Traffic Advisory for Munich
Further inconveniences are expected due to transport escorts for high-ranking state guests and accompanying security measures.
For safety reasons and to ensure smooth proceedings for registered assemblies, necessary no-parking zones will be established. Therefore, Munich residents are advised to check their vehicles, just in case they're in one of those no-parking zones. And, if you're already vacationing or been secluded with your significant other over the weekend, make sure someone takes care of your vehicle.
On Wednesday evening, February 12, 2025, these no-parking zones will be enforced and cleared. Scofflaws will see their vehicles towed without a second thought.
In addition, during the event, there will be a drone no-fly zone with a 5.5 km radius around Sendlinger Tor, extending from the Olympiapark to the north of Perlacher Forest.
