Navigating the Vienna Political Landscape After the Elections

The Reds, aka Vienna's Social Democratic Party (SPÖ), had a thrilling—and somewhat tense—night. While polls hinted at a 37% share, the first projection indicated that Michael Ludwig would snag over 39%. Even with a slight drop from his 42% in 2020, he outperformed his counterparts in Lower Austria, Carinthia, and Burgenland.

Reds to Tackle Immigration

The Vienna Reds have made it clear they're sticking to a "pragmatic course," potentially keeping the Blues (Austria's conservative party, ÖVP) at bay to some extent. With three potential coalition partners in the mix, Ludwig will likely find solace in this election result.

However, the shine may wear off for SPOE chairman and Vice-Chancellor Andreas Babler, as some Reds may argue for a "centrist course" as a recipe for success. Ludwing's coalition choice could get interesting, with the NEOS (a liberal party with 10 seats) a likely contender.

City Blues Flex Their Muscles but Disappoint

As anticipated by all polls, the Blues nearly tripled their results from 2020's Vienna election, continuous from the Ibiza scandal and Strache split. While they posted the largest gain in history, they fell short of achieving the over 30% they managed in 2015.

Bitter pills for Dominik Nepp and FPÖ boss Herbert Kickl, as the FPÖ failed to exceed the blue result in the National Council election in Vienna. Disappointment amongst their ranks sunk in, as many had predicted a 25% haul in Vienna.

ÖVP: From Losing Streak to Co-Government Dream

Despite the ÖVP's heavy losses and failing to double digits, they remain upbeat. Most in the ÖVP believe they have Chancellor Christian Stocker to thank for not fumbling even worse in Vienna. In the wake of this defeat, the ÖVP has made a bold move to seek a government with the SPÖ.

The Greens also fancy the idea of co-governing with the Reds, as do the Vienna Greens, eager for another chance after being ousted from the federal government. Vienna Reds informed oe24 that the Greens were "almost uncomfortably eager" to cooperate–a stance that district Reds find divisive, with some favoring a Red-Green comeback, and others hesitant.

Pinks Sustain Anxious Suspense

The Greens weren't the only ones biting their nails throughout the night. The Vienna Pinks (Die Grünen) watched as a red-pink majority appeared to slip away, leaving them on edge. The first projection set their minds at ease, as the city Pinks could potentially form a coalition with the Vienna SPÖ.

As the dust settles, it remains unclear what alliances will take shape. One thing's for sure: the Reds see the importance of prioritizing healthcare over immigration, the ÖVP understands that their "asylum campaign" didn't score any additional votes, and the FPÖ is learning that the efforts to limit immigration have their limits.

  1. The Reds, led by Vice-Chancellor Andreas Babler, are likely to find solace in their election results, as they aim for a pragmatic approach in coalition building with three potential partners, potentially keeping the Blues at bay to some extent.
  2. Ludwig, the SPÖ chairman, could face a challenge from Reds advocating for a centrist course, as he considers possible coalition partners, with the NEOS being a likely contender.
  3. Despite the City Blues tripling their results from the 2020 election, they fell short of achieving the over 30% they managed in 2015, causing disappointment among the party's ranks.
  4. Amidst their heavy losses and failing to double digits, the ÖVP remains optimistic and has made a bold move to seek a government with the SPÖ, while the Greens also express interest in co-governing with the Reds, creating an anxious suspense for the Vienna Pinks, who could potentially form a coalition with the SPÖ.
