Swinging Back into the Apocalypse: 28 Years Later's Newbies

Come June 20th, Sony's 28 Years Later is poised to bring back the chilling post-apocalyptic landscape we've come to dread, but this time with a twist. In an interview with IGN, director Danny Boyle reveals a new generation of terrors that'll make your hair stand on end.

While the original fast-running Infected have undoubtedly left a mark on the marketing, Boyle hints at "Slow-lows," a mutated form that survives in the new environment, hanging low and waiting for their prey. Despite their lethargic nature, Boyle advises against crossing paths with them.

But its not one-size-fits-all with the Slow-lows. The gang's all here, as the film introduces Berserker and Alpha types, stronger than the regular Infected and possibly even displaying signs of intelligence in their Rage Virus-influenced minds.

From a technical standpoint, the team behind the scenes shot the Infected in an unstable, unreliable manner, similar to the first movie. However, the new undead have a few upgrades, such as cameras attached to Slow-low performers to build audience fear or recording sequences using 20 iPhones to mimic bullet time effects.

These new Infected also lend a hand to the film's aesthetics. For the format junkies out there, Boyle tells IGN that the film was shot on widescreen to replicate the unease and velocity of the infected in the original films. Keep your eyes peeled as the infected could pop up anywhere, and you'll have to stay vigilant to keep the jitters at bay.

So buckle up and get ready for the return of the infected, as 28 Years Later hits theaters in June.
