French Tennis Championship: Final Steps Remaining

Alexander Zverev, the third-ranked male tennis player, displayed an impressive performance in the opening round of the French Open 2023. Facing American Learner Tien on Court Suzanne-Lenglen, Zverev secured a straightforward victory in three sets (6:3, 6:3, 6:4), advancing to the second round with relative ease.

The German star took only 1 hour and 53 minutes to convert his first match point, demonstrating his dominance over the young Tien, who had defeated Zverev in Acapulco earlier this year. In the second round, Zverev will play either Dutch tennis player Jesper de Jong or Italian Francesco Passaro, scheduled for Thursday.

Despite a somewhat uneven start to the clay-court season, Zverev delivered a solid performance in his Paris debut. Although Tien, a promising 19-year-old, was not considered a formidable opponent, Zverev strategically eased into the tournament, saving energy and navigating through tricky situations in the second set.

Post-match, Zverev expressed optimism, stating, "It was a good start to the tournament. I hope it continues like this and that we have two great weeks." The reigning finalist also acknowledged that his previous loss to Tien might have helped him prepare.

There were no signs of the illness that had affected Zverev at the Hamburg Open last week. In his hometown, Zverev had complained of nausea and fever after losing to Frenchman Alexandre Müller in the quarterfinals. Referring to his early exits in Madrid, Rome, and his illness in Hamburg, Zverev commented, "It wasn't the best preparation I've ever had. But it wasn't the best before Australia either."

Zverev's powerful forehand proved effective against Tien, as he efficiently saved break points and consistently placed his shots down the line. Tennis legend Boris Becker praised Zverev's performance, noting, "That's his best shot. It was a good start. Let's hope it continues like this."

In last year's French Open, Zverev reached the final only to lose to Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz in five sets. As the second round approaches, Zverev will look to capitalize on his strong start and deliver another impressive showing at Roland Garros.

Zverev's victory over Tien sets the stage for a potential clash with either Dutch tennis player Jesper de Jong or Italian Francesco Passaro in the next round. Reminiscing about his previous match with Tien in Acapulco, Zverev shows that he's taking his sports seriously, focusing on improving his tennis game.
