In the midst of a devastating war that has been raging since October 7, 2023, between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, French President Emmanuel Macron has taken a stance, stating that Israel has the right to defend itself against Hamas. However, he has also demanded that Israel should no longer receive weapons from other countries, expressing concern over the potential consequences of an Israeli weapons shortage.

The Gaza Strip, a small coastal region on the Mediterranean Sea, between Israel and Egypt, has been the epicentre of this conflict. Home to over 2 million Palestinians, the Strip has been largely destroyed, with tens of thousands of civilians killed, and many facing starvation. The Strip is controlled by Hamas, a Palestinian organization seeking to eliminate the Jewish state of Israel and labeled as a terrorist organization by many countries.

The conflict was sparked when Hamas launched an attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. Israel, in response, has been carrying out a series of attacks on the Strip, which has been criticized by the United Nations for causing thousands of civilian deaths and blocking food and medicine from entering the Strip.

The war has taken a heavy toll on both sides. In Israel, approximately 1,200 deaths have been reported, while in the Gaza Strip, the exact number of casualties is unknown due to the destruction and chaos.

Notably, Germany has been a major supplier of weapons to Israel, providing significant military equipment such as tanks, tank components, anti-tank weapons, submarines, and corvettes. From October 7, 2023, to May 2025, German arms exports to Israel reached around 485 million euros, accounting for about one-third of Israeli arms imports in that period. Other countries involved are not explicitly mentioned in the search results for 2023, but Finland acquired Israeli-made missile defense systems, indicating at least Israel exports weapons technology.

The USA and Germany are among the countries that supply Israel with weapons. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was enraged by Macron's stance and called his demand a disgrace. However, Macron implied that many innocent people, unaffiliated with Hamas, are dying in the conflict.

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict, also known as the Middle East conflict, is a long-standing dispute revolving around borders. Israel was established in 1948, but Palestinians were already living there, leading to recurring wars. The Gaza Strip relies on international food aid, highlighting the humanitarian crisis that the conflict has caused.

As the war continues, the international community is called upon to find a peaceful solution to end the suffering of the civilians caught in the crossfire.
