French President Emmanuel Macron and Wife Sue Right-Wing Podcaster Over Conspiracy Theory

In a recent development, French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron, have filed a defamation lawsuit against right-wing podcaster Candace Owens in a U.S. court. The lawsuit accuses Owens of spreading a baseless conspiracy theory about Brigitte Macron's identity.

The lawsuit states that Owens has repeatedly claimed that Brigitte Macron was born a man named Jean-Michel Trogneux, who is actually Brigitte's brother. This false assertion has led to the Macrons becoming the target of unwarranted attention and has caused them considerable distress.

Owens has used this false statement to promote her independent platform, gain notoriety, and make money. The lawsuit also mentions that she has hosted an eight-part podcast series titled Becoming Brigitte, focusing on this conspiracy theory.

The Macrons have been a target for attention due to their unconventional relationship, as they met when Emmanuel was a 15-year-old student and Brigitte was a 39-year-old drama teacher at a Catholic school in France. Their relationship began when Emmanuel was a student at Le Providence, and Brigitte was working as a drama teacher.

Brigitte has previously admitted that having an age gap in their relationship has been difficult at times. However, the couple reconnected later in life and tied the knot in 2007.

The lawsuit against Owens comes just a few weeks after French judge overturned libel convictions against Amandine Roy and Natacha Rey for peddling similar theories. The Macrons' relationship has been a topic of speculation in the past, but this lawsuit marks a significant step in their fight against misinformation.

Owens' content is not intended to inform but to inflame and attract attention through sensationalism and conspiracy theories. The lawsuit labels her as an independent 'investigative journalist' while routinely peddling misinformation under the guise of legitimate reporting.

In response to the lawsuit, Owens' spokesperson stated, "Candace is not shutting up. This is a foreign government attacking the First Amendment rights of an American independent journalist."

The Macrons are seeking a jury trial to award them "actual and presumed damages to be specifically determined at trial." The lawsuit includes evidence like family photos and birth announcements, as well as the extent of Owens' involvement with the conspiracy theory community.

As the case progresses, it remains to be seen how this lawsuit will impact Owens' career and the spread of misinformation in the media.
