In an unprecedented legal move, French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron, have filed a defamation lawsuit against right-wing podcaster Candace Owens for peddling a conspiracy theory about Brigitte Macron's gender. The lawsuit stems from Owens' persistent claims that Brigitte Macron, born as Jean-Michel Trogneux, is actually a man, and not the woman she is known to be. This false statement, according to the Macrons, has been used by Owens to promote her independent platform, gain notoriety, and make money. The Macrons' lawsuit includes evidence such as family photos and birth announcements, as well as the extent of Owens' involvement with the conspiracy theory community. It also accuses Owens of spreading other defamatory claims about the Macrons, including that they are blood relatives committing incest, and that President Macron was chosen to be the President of France as part of a CIA-operated mind-control program. This is not the first time the Macrons have been the target of attention due to their unconventional relationship. They met when Emmanuel was a 15-year-old student and Brigitte was a 39-year-old drama teacher at a Catholic school in northern France. Brigitte Macron has previously admitted that having an age gap in their relationship has been difficult at times. In a statement, she said, 'We are not a model couple... Being a couple is complicated, it's an everyday struggle... When you have a big age difference, it can be even more complicated.' Owens, in response to the lawsuit, has stated that she would 'stake her entire professional reputation on the fact that Brigitte Macron is in fact a man.' However, a spokesperson for Owens responded to the lawsuit, stating, 'Candace Owens is not shutting up... This is a foreign government attacking the First Amendment rights of an American independent journalist.' The Macrons are seeking a jury trial to award them 'actual and presumed damages to be specifically determined at trial.' The lawsuit against Owens comes after a French judge overturned libel convictions against Amandine Roy and Natacha Rey for peddling similar theories. Both Roy and Rey are named in the Macrons' new U.S. lawsuit, and Brigitte has appealed her case in France to the country's highest court. In addition to posting about the theory on social media and frequently addressing it on her podcast, Owens also hosted an eight-part podcast series titled Becoming Brigitte. The original article can be found on People. Owens' content is not intended to inform but to inflame and attract attention through sensationalism and conspiracy theories.
