French President Embraces Resistance to US Proposal for Russian Leader's Involvement in Israel-Iran Dispute
Going Against the Suggested Mediator
In a dramatic turn of events, French President Emmanuel Macron has squashed the idea of Russia mediating the Israel-Iran crisis, a proposal made by former US President Donald Trump. Macron declared that Russia, embroiled in an intense conflict and repeatedly flouting the United Nations Charter, simply isn't fit to be a mediator.
While addressing issues in an interview with ABC News, Trump had hinted at Putin, whose forces invaded Ukraine and stalled Trump's attempts at a ceasefire with Kyiv, as a potential mediator. This idea, however, did not find favor with Macron.
"I refuse to believe that Russia, currently caught up in a high-intensity conflict and disregarding the UN Charter for several years, can play the role of a mediator," said Macron, upholding his stance.
During his visit to Greenland, Macron firmly stated that France had not contributed to any Israeli attacks against Iran. This affirmation reaffirmed France's neutrality in the regional conflict.
Before embarking on a trip to Canada for the Group of Seven Leaders' summit, Macron visited Greenland, a self-governing part of Denmark with the right to independence, which Trump has threatened to seize. During a press conference with Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen, Macron expressed concerns over Greenland's vulnerability to "predatory ambition" and warned this served as a wake-up call for all Europeans. He clarified that he had already spoken with Trump regarding Greenland, and would discuss the matter further at the G7.
"Greenland is not to be bought, not to be seized," Macron said firmly, emphasizing cooperation rather than confrontation in the future. Despite these gravely expressed concerns, Macron expressed doubt about any potential US invasion of Greenland.
