French betting company Winamax joins the German Sportsbook Association (DSWV), marking it as the first French bookmaker to become a member.
Winamax, the leading French betting provider, has made a significant entry into the German sports betting market. The company, licensed by the German Gaming Authority (GGL), has been offering its services in Germany since 2021.
In a notable move, Winamax has become a shirt sponsor of VfB Stuttgart in the Bundesliga, starting from the 2023/24 season. This partnership marks Winamax's first major step into German football sponsorship.
Winamax's arrival in the German market is also marked by its membership in the German Sports Betting Association (DSWV) as of January 1, 2024. DSWV, an organization dedicated to combating illegal betting offers and strengthening the legal market, now has 17 members, with Winamax being the latest addition.
The DSWV President, Mathias Dahms, expressed his joy at Winamax joining the association, stating that the French provider brings expertise and fresh wind from the French market. Winamax's CEO, Alexandre Roos, has expressed a desire to bundle efforts with the DSWV for player protection and combating the black market.
Winamax originally started as a fantasy football provider in London. It later expanded its services to include sports betting, becoming the market leader in the online poker segment in France with a market share of 60% after the legalization of the French market. Today, Winamax is based in Paris and employs 300 people.
In the sports betting segment in France, Winamax currently holds a market share of 35%, making it the market leader. This success is a testament to Winamax's commitment to responsible gaming and raising standards in the sports betting industry.
Both Winamax and the DSWV generally advocate for responsible and clear regulation of sports betting advertising in Germany. They support regulations that balance consumer protection with a sustainable market, emphasizing the need to limit advertising that targets vulnerable groups like minors while allowing firms to promote regulated sports betting responsibly.
The 2021 State Treaty on Gambling (Glücksspielstaatsvertrag 2021) and its advertising restrictions, which include bans or severe limits on advertising during certain times and targeting youth protection, are areas of focus for both entities. For updates on their detailed, official positions or recent statements, one may refer to their press releases or statements issued in mid-2025, especially in the context of the upcoming review of the 2021 State Gambling Treaty highlighted for discussion in the 2025 Gaming in Germany Conference.
