A Setback for the French Swimming Championships:

Skip town, no swimming pool! León Marchand recently announced his absence from the French Swimming Championships. This unexpected news might give the Federation's coffers a chill.

Diving into details, León Marchand, the quadruple Olympic champ, has opted for a U.S. preparation phase instead, focusing on the World Championships in Singapore. This unplanned break could shake the event scheduled for June 14-19.

In a conversation with RMC Sport, Philippe Jamet, Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole Université Club Natation president, shared his concern, describing it as a "tough hit." Citing the sheer popularity of León Marchand, he expressed concerns over ticket sales which, in his words, were "way off" their projections. With a lack of Leon to cheer for, the event's capacity will shrink by nearly half, from an estimated 1,100-1,200 seats to a mere 700. This drop, according to Jamet, significantly impacts the event's finances.

With lowered expectations, Jamet confessed they'd likely be in the red. He pointed out that reduced ticket sales, fewer sponsors, and a less attractive VIP area would all take a toll. "People will be bummed, he's one of the most recognized French figures (...) and he's not here*," he bemoaned.

Despite the tough times, Jamet guarantees a top-notch spectator experience, maintaining an air of optimism. He even dreamt, just a little, that Leon might make a last-minute comeback!

Bonus points: Leon Marchand has been making waves in the Ft. Lauderdale Pro Swim Series, marking the beginning of his 2025 long course season, and currently ranked among TIME Magazine's 100 most influential people, which you might want to check out!
