After his hat-trick in the Europa League, Michael Gregoritsch from SC Freiburg breathed a sigh of relief. Scoring three times in the 5-0 (4-0) victory against Olympiakos Piraeus was his first goal of the season.
"Everyone knew how much this type of thing affected me," the 29-year-old striker reflected on his 14-game goal drought. "But the way the team celebrated when I scored my first goal shows that I'm in the right place here."
Coming off a four-game losing streak in the Bundesliga, Freiburg aims to continue their unbeaten run on Sunday at FSV Mainz 05 (3:30 PM/DAZN). Gregoritsch, however, was eager to soak in the moment first. "Sometimes you don't understand why things go in, and sometimes you don't understand why they don't. But for me, it was a wonderful evening that I'll never forget." Only for the U21 national team had he managed a perfect hat-trick before, Gregoritsch noted.
Facing a tougher challenge against FSV Mainz 05, Freiburg will need to be at their best. "We know what we have to do there," Gregoritsch said. "We have to give 100%. An evening like this is crucial for us in the upcoming matches." Gregoritsch contributed to the scoring with one goal using his foot and two using his head against Piraeus, and set up Kilian Sildillia's goal before halftime.
