Freiburg soccer club plans to employ threadworms for controlling Japanese beetle infestations.

In the picturesque city of Freiburg, Germany, two local sports clubs, SC Freiburg and TSV Alemannia, are set to implement an eco-friendly pest control strategy. The Japanese beetle, an invasive insect that can cause significant damage in agriculture, has made its way to the city, prompting the need for action.

The professional training grounds of SC Freiburg, located within the infestation zone, and TSV Alemannia's lawn areas, which are situated outside the affected area, will receive treatment with threadworms (entomopathogenic nematodes) in September. This biological alternative to chemical pesticides offers a more sustainable approach to combat the beetles, reducing environmental impact and avoiding harmful residues on the training grounds.

The Japanese beetle larvae, or grubs, live in the soil, feeding on grassroots and damaging turf health. Threadworms naturally infect and kill these larvae, helping to control the beetle population at a critical stage. By using threadworms, both clubs aim to preserve the quality and resilience of their turf, essential for optimal training conditions.

The authorities are working tirelessly to prevent the Japanese beetles from spreading further, with immediate restrictions issued last week for parts of Freiburg city. These restrictions include a ban on watering lawns and green areas in the infestation zone north of the city center during the summer months. However, TSV Alemannia, located outside the infestation zone, is exempt from this watering ban.

This strategic pest management approach aligns with Germany's strong regulations on pesticide use, especially in recreational and sports areas. Biological control agents like threadworms are often permitted and preferred to comply with regulations and protect player health.

It's worth noting that the Japanese beetle does not pose a threat to human and animal health. However, in the EU, the Japanese beetle is one of the pests that must be systematically controlled due to its potential impact on agriculture and turf quality.

In neighbouring Switzerland, threadworms were used successfully in public parks and sports facilities in Basel last year. With the deployment of threadworms at SC Freiburg and TSV Alemannia's training grounds, Freiburg continues to demonstrate its commitment to sustainable pest control measures.

TSV Alemannia, a multi-sports club where football is played among other sports, will also benefit from this proactive approach, ensuring the continuity of high-quality training conditions for its athletes.

As the battle against the Japanese beetle continues, the use of threadworms at SC Freiburg and TSV Alemannia's training grounds marks a significant step towards a more sustainable and eco-friendly approach to pest control in the sports industry.

  1. The use of threadworms in sports clubs' training grounds for pest control aligns with European Union's regulations due to the potential impact of the Japanese beetle on agriculture and turf quality.
  2. The implementation of eco-friendly pest control strategies, such as the use of threadworms, ensures the preservation of quality and resilience of sports turf, crucial for optimal training conditions.
  3. In the pursuit of sustainable pest control measures, Freiburg, following Switzerland's lead, deploys threadworms at SC Freiburg and TSV Alemannia's training grounds to combat the Japanese beetle infestation.
  4. The proactive use of biological control agents like threadworms is not only essential for environmental conservation but also necessary for the health and well-being of athletes participating in sports such as football, which are part of European leagues.
