Freiburg restricts winter swimming to protect fish during spawning season

Freiburg residents and visitors are advised to avoid natural bodies of water for winter swimming until April 30. This ban, enforced by local authorities, aims to protect fish during their spawning season.

While winter swimming is prohibited in all areas of the Dreisam River, it is allowed in specific zones. Between Kronenbrücke and Café Extrablatt, enthusiasts can enjoy the activity. However, they must adhere to the general ban until the end of April.

Freiburg has designated several lakes for winter swimming: Flückigersee, Tunisee, Silbersee, Moosweiher, Opfinger lakes, and Dietenbachsee. These areas are monitored and approved by local health and environmental departments, such as the public health office and environmental protection agency of the city or district of Freiburg. Swimmers are encouraged to use these approved zones to ensure the safety of both people and fish.

Until April 30, winter swimming in Freiburg is restricted to designated lakes and a specific zone in the Dreisam River. The ban in other areas aims to protect fish during their critical spawning season. Swimmers are urged to respect these regulations and use approved zones for their safety and the preservation of local wildlife.
