MV masters ice storm - few accidents and some falls - Freezing Rain Covers Northern Germany in Treacherous Black Ice
Overnight freezing rain left much of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania covered in black ice, prompting warnings and disrupting travel across the region. By late morning, the severe ice alert was lifted, though risks persisted in some areas.
The German Weather Service issued a severe ice warning after freezing rain created widespread black ice. Major highways and main roads were cleared by morning, but many side streets stayed slippery. A lesser advisory for 'significant black ice' remained active until 11:00 AM in western areas and noon in the east.
Bus services faced delays and partial suspensions in the morning, particularly in Ludwigslust-Parchim district and inland parts of Rostock district. Operators like VLP, which runs school and regular buses, adjusted schedules due to the conditions. Meanwhile, NAHBUS GmbH and Autokraft, responsible for regional connections, also reported disruptions. Emergency services dealt with nine ice-related accidents in the Ludwigslust police area by 10:00 AM. University Medicine Greifswald treated 15 patients for falls and fractures caused by the icy surfaces. Despite the hazards, police in Rostock and Neubrandenburg reported no serious injuries.
Though the severe ice warning was lifted, freezing moisture continued to pose a risk of icy patches. The number of accidents and falls stayed within manageable levels, but authorities urged caution. Residual slippery spots may still affect travel in some areas.
