The Skaņu Mežs Festival returns for another year, this time in 2025, promising an exciting lineup of artists and events. The festival, which takes place on October 3 and 4 at Hanzas Perons (16A Hanzas street) in Riga, Latvia, will feature a diverse range of performances, film screenings, workshops, and audiovisual art events.
Among the performers at the festival is violinist Katt Hernandez, who will grace the stage with her talents. Katt, who earned her PhD from Lund University in 2023, is sure to deliver a captivating performance.
Another artist not to be missed is Twig Harper, a sound artist and performer who emerged from the Midwest noise underground in the '90s. Twig co-founded and operated Baltimore's legendary Tarantula Hill collective for two decades before moving to Los Angeles. Twig's work involves pushing the limits of analog electronics, broken circuits, tape manipulation, and psychoacoustic trickery, making for a unique and immersive listening experience.
The Baltic Analog Lab, an artist collective in Riga, will also be a key player in the festival. The Lab is dedicated to research and promotion of analog film and photography techniques, and will be hosting a variety of events throughout the festival. One of their contributions will be the electroacoustic duo Elka Bong, consisting of Al Margolis and Walter Wright. Al, who has operated the labels Sound of Pig and Pogus Productions, and collaborated with Pauline Oliveros and Phill Niblock, brings a wealth of experience to the duo.
Elīna Gesta, a video artist who performs under the name DEE at music events, will also be showcasing her work at the festival. Elīna explores the intersection between sound and visual art, and has recently started sharing her music selections with a wider audience, ranging from Italian futurism to contemporary electronic releases.
The festival will kick off with an opening event at SunsStudo (9A Magoņu street), the date of which is yet to be announced. Admission to this event is free, and it will begin at 19:00.
