Frederik Rønnow's Denmark return ends in heartbreak as focus shifts to Union Berlin's survival fight

Frederik Rønnow has returned to Denmark's national team after a brief retirement from international football. The goalkeeper, who last played for his country in late 2023, stepped back in during the 2025/2026 World Cup qualifiers due to an injury crisis. Meanwhile, his club, Union Berlin, faces a critical phase in their Bundesliga campaign. Rønnow initially retired from international duty at the end of 2023. However, Denmark's goalkeeper shortages led to his recall in late 2024. He served as backup to debutant Mads Hermansen in matches against North Macedonia and the Czech Republic. Despite his return, Denmark lost to Czechia on penalties, failing to qualify for the World Cup.

The disappointment has not shifted his focus from club duties. Rønnow has been Union Berlin's first-choice goalkeeper since 2021 and signed a contract extension last summer. He insists his frustration with Denmark's exit will not impact his performances for the German side.

Union Berlin currently hold a seven-point lead over the relegation playoff spot. Yet, their recent form has been poor, with only two wins in their last twelve games. A once-comfortable double-digit lead over the drop zone has shrunk, adding pressure ahead of their match against FC St. Pauli.

Rønnow remains committed to the club, even suggesting his career could end at Union Berlin. He has spoken openly about his happiness in the city, both professionally and personally, with his family settled there. Rønnow's immediate priority is helping Union Berlin secure their Bundesliga status. The team's upcoming fixtures will determine whether they maintain their buffer over the relegation battle. For now, the goalkeeper's focus stays firmly on club football, despite his recent international setback.
