Frederico Varandas wins third term as Sporting CP president in landslide victory
Frederico Varandas has secured a third term as president of Sporting CP after a decisive landslide victory. The 46-year-old former medical director won 89.47% of the vote, extending his leadership at the Lisbon club. His re-election follows a period marked by significant success on the pitch.
Varandas first took office in 2018, becoming Sporting's 44th president. He won that election with 42.32% of the vote—the highest participation in the club's history at the time. Since then, his tenure has brought nine domestic trophies, making him the most decorated football president in Sporting's history.
Under his leadership, the club ended a 19-year Primeira Liga title drought in the 2020/21 season. The following year, they defended the league crown and clinched a domestic double for the first time in 23 years. Additional silverware includes three League Cups, two Portuguese Cups, and the 2021 Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira. This latest election saw Varandas face only one opponent, Bruno Sorreluz. Out of 14,337 valid votes, Varandas received 67,106—a figure reflecting his overwhelming support—while Sorreluz secured just 919 votes, or 6.28%. The result mirrors his 2022 victory, when he won 85.8% against Nuno Sousa and Ricardo Oliveira. Following the win, Varandas kept most of his leadership team intact. Pedro Almeida Cabral replaced João Palma as head of the General Assembly Board, ensuring continuity in the club's governance.
Varandas' third term begins with a clear mandate from Sporting's members. His track record includes breaking long-standing trophy droughts and maintaining a dominant position in Portuguese football. The club now looks ahead with the same leadership that has delivered its most successful period in decades.
