Freddie De Tommaso, 29, Storms Opera World

Freddie De Tommaso, a 29-year-old British-Italian tenor, has taken the opera world by storm. Born in Tunbridge Wells, he gained widespread fame in December 2021 when he stepped in at the last minute to sing Mario Cavaradossi in Puccini's Tosca at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden. His sensational performance instantly made headlines and launched his career.

De Tommaso's love for opera began at a young age, influenced by the opera music played at his parents' Italian restaurant. He joined his school choir at five and later studied music at the Royal Academy of Music in London, graduating in 2018. As a student, he sang roles such as Don José in La Tragédie de Carmen and Rodolfo in La bohème, and made his debut at the Royal Opera House in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg.

His talent has led him to work with renowned conductors like Zubin Mehta and Antonio Pappano, and perform in concert with Lise Davidsen. De Tommaso has graced prestigious opera houses such as the Bavarian State Opera, Teatro alla Scala, Vienna State Opera, and Arena di Verona. In 2021, he became the youngest tenor to sing the part of Mario Cavaradossi in Tosca at the Royal Opera House, and the first British tenor to perform the role in almost 60 years.

De Tommaso describes his voice type as 'spinto' tenor, which has a bright sound quality with a weighty force behind it, perfect for roles like Don Jose in Carmen and Cavaradossi in Tosca. He has released two critically acclaimed albums: Passione (2021) and Il Tenore (2022), both of which topped the official classical album chart.

Freddie De Tommaso's meteoric rise in the opera world is a testament to his talent and dedication. With his unique voice type and impressive resume, he is set to become one of the leading tenors of his generation. His future in opera promises to be as vibrant and exciting as his debut performance.
