The fraud surprised Aurubis this year, with losses attributed to manipulated samples of valuable metals and discrepancies in special recycling deliveries. The company speculates that the deceptive samples, showcasing high levels of valuable metals, were presented, yet the deliveries themselves contained significantly lesser valuable metals. Consequently, over-invoicing ensued.
The financial toll was severe, causing fiscal year 2022/23 to close with a 34% decrease in operating pre-tax profit, according to Aurubis AG's announcement in November, with the complete fiscal details set to be released Wednesday.
