German biathlete Franziska Preuss made history by clinching the Overall Biathlon World Cup title for the first time in her career. In a nail-biting finish at Oslo's Holmenkollen, Preuss bested Frenchwoman Lou Jeanmonnot, who faltered on the final kilometer, seizing the coveted yellow jersey [2].
Striding towards her fourth win of the season, the 31-year-old agile competitor showed no mercy as she outmaneuvered Jeanmonnot, snatching third place from her rival's grasp. Drama ensued on the final lap when the two rivals made contact, resulting in Jeanmonnot's tumble, leaving Preuss with a clear path to the finish line.
Preuss becomes the sixth German athlete to claim the prestigious crystal globe, an exclusive club that includes Martina Glagow (2002/03), Kati Wilhelm (2005/06), Andrea Henkel (2006/07), Magdalena Neuner (2007/08, 2009/10, and 2011/12), and Laura Dahlmeier (2016/17) [3]. Going into the race, Preuss trailed Jeanmonnot by five points.
Season after season, Preuss has been steadily improving, as evidenced by her impressive performance during this campaign. She secured four individual wins in the World Cup, claimed the small crystal globes in sprint and mass start, and continued her winning streak at the Lenzerheide World Championships by racking up an impressive four medals [4].
