World-renowned architect Frank Gehry has died at the age of 96. His groundbreaking designs reshaped modern architecture, leaving a lasting mark on cities worldwide. He passed away at his Santa Monica home after a brief respiratory illness.
Gehry was born in Toronto in 1929 to Polish Jewish immigrants. As a teenager, he moved to Los Angeles, where he worked as a truck driver alongside his father. By the 1960s, he had founded his own architecture firm in the city.
His bold, sculptural style became iconic. Among his most famous works are the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, and the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein. These buildings, with their sweeping curves and unconventional forms, redefined public spaces.
Even in his later years, Gehry remained deeply involved in new projects. Recent works include the Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial in Washington, D.C., completed in 2023, and the ongoing Guggenheim Abu Dhabi in the UAE. He also contributed to the revitalisation of the Los Angeles River area, designed the Tower at PNC Plaza in Pittsburgh, and worked on private residences and cultural buildings across Europe and North America.
A recipient of the Pritzker Prize—one of architecture’s highest honours—Gehry continued shaping skylines until his death. His influence extended far beyond individual buildings, inspiring generations of designers to push creative boundaries.
Gehry’s death marks the end of an era for architecture. His buildings stand as enduring testaments to his vision, blending artistry with function. The projects he left unfinished, including the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, will carry forward his legacy.
