France's President Macron asserts that Israel is systematically damaging its reputation and credibility
In a significant development, Israeli troops initiated a ground incursion into the City of Gaza this week, aiming to expel approximately 600,000 Palestinians who still reside there. This move comes following more than 150 attacks by the Israeli Army on Gaza in the past few days.
The ongoing conflict has also seen the Palestinian Islamic movement Hamas using certain towers in Gaza to monitor Israeli troops. The escalating violence has resulted in civilian deaths and displacement, leading many to question the legitimacy of Israel's actions.
French President Emmanuel Macron has been vocal in his criticism of Israel's military actions, stating that they are "totally destroying" Israel's "image and credibility" in the eyes of world public opinion. Macron considers Israel's proposed annexation of occupied West Bank territory as unjust and irresponsible.
In an interview, Macron accused the Netanyahu government of aiming to make the two-state solution impossible through military and political actions in Palestinian territories. He believes that annexation would be "completely counterproductive", including for Israel.
Macron has not visited Israel recently, with his last attempt in 2025 being denied by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu due to Macron's support for recognizing a Palestinian state. In late September 2025, Macron announced his intention to recognize a Palestinian state at the UN General Assembly, leading Israel to declare him "undesirable" until France withdraws that plan.
However, Macron defends recognition of the Palestinian State as a way to isolate Hamas. He plans to recognize the Palestinian State at the UN General Assembly within a few days, and has expressed his willingness to go to Israel to explain his position and work with Netanyahu.
If the Netanyahu government continues its offensive in Gaza, Europe will have to open a new debate about imposing sanctions on Israel, according to Macron. He admitted the possibility of sanctions against Israel if its government continues its offensive in Gaza.
Israel's plan for large-scale construction of settlements in the West Bank would practically divide the region, further complicating the already complex situation. Macron defends the recognition of the Palestinian State to prevent the "destruction of the possibility of the two-state solution" by the Israeli government.
This ongoing conflict continues to raise concerns globally, with many calling for a peaceful resolution to ensure the rights and safety of all parties involved.
