Emmanuel Macron, Angela Merz, Keir Starmer, and Donald Tusk unite forces to put pressure on Russia for a ceasefire in Ukraine, with the U.S. taking the lead in monitoring it.

In a recent joint press conference with fellow leaders, Emmanuel Macron declared that the U.S. will be in charge of primary ceasefire monitoring, with the support of Europeans. Yet, it's been agreed that all Europeans will contribute to the task.

Ukraine, along with its critical European allies, demands an unconditional, 30-day ceasefire from Russia, set to take effect from Monday. President Zelensky states, "The United States is with us, and if Russia refuses a complete and unconditional ceasefire, sanctions must be imposed, with tougher sanctions targeting the energy sector and banking system."

Politics: Merz Backs Ceasefire Initiative; Trump on Board

Prior to the meeting, Zelensky and the "coalition of the willing" had a call with U.S. President Donald Trump. Andrij Jermak, Zelensky's chief of staff, shared a photo of the group, labeling the moment as historic.

Post-meeting, Merz stated, "If Russia denies this ceasefire - a ceasefire that serves as a foundation for immediate negotiations - then we will stand by Ukraine, and increase the pressure on Russia."

Merz: A Slim Shot, but a Shot Nonetheless

In a candid admission, Merz explained, "This is the most significant diplomatic move in recent months, possibly years, to put an end to the war in Ukraine. I'm returning feeling we might just have a faint hope."

Regarding potential Taurus cruise missile deliveries, Merz hinted, "We aim to support Ukraine militarily as much as we can and prudently. And we do it to put an end to this war."

Opening up to a potential phone call with Putin, Merz expressed, "That's an option, of course. But I'd only do it in coordination with our European partners and the U.S."

Tusk: "Global Free World Stands Together"

Tusk, his Polish counterpart, expressed optimism about the global coalition, saying, "For the first time in a long while, we feel that the entire free world is united."

Macron's Security Guarantees for Ukraine

Delving into specifics, Macron shared, "We have discussed robust security guarantees for Ukraine with all the heads of state and government who have joined our 'Coalition of the Willing'."

Russia: Ceasefire, But No Arms for Kyiv

In response, the Kremlin has set forth conditions for the ceasefire, requiring an end to arms deliveries to Kyiv by the U.S. and EU. Dmitri Peskov, Kremlin spokesman, expressed concern that allowing a ceasefire would give Ukraine an advantage, enabling them to bring more troops, train personnel, and provide rest for current fighters.

Frustrated by the sanctions, Russia remains unaffected, as Peskov shared, "We're thinking ahead, considering what we'll do following the imposition of these sanctions, in order to minimize their impact."
