France overhauls flight dispute rules and expands travel options in 2026
France has introduced several key changes in early 2026, affecting travel, dining, and consumer rights. New rules now require mediation before disputes over flight delays or cancellations can proceed. Meanwhile, updates in tax, retail, and transport are also rolling out across the country.
From February, passengers facing flight delays or cancellations must first go through mandatory mediation with the Médiateur du Tourisme et du Voyage before pursuing claims. The move aims to streamline dispute resolution, though it comes as French airports struggle with punctuality. A recent global ranking showed poor overall performance, with only Toulouse and Lyon standing out as exceptions. No French airport, however, was recognised for strong customer service or shopping in the AirHelp World's Best Airports 2025 report.
On a brighter note, food lovers can explore the Michelin Guide's latest Bib Gourmand list for 2026, featuring 75 restaurants praised for quality and affordability. Shoppers will soon see a new payment option, Click to Pay, allowing online purchases without repeatedly entering full card details.
Travel options are expanding too, with Ryanair relaunching its Brive-Stansted route. Flights will operate twice weekly—Mondays and Fridays—from March 30 to October 23, with fares starting at €16.99 one-way. Tickets are now on sale.
Elsewhere, Auchan has reversed its earlier rebranding strategy and will instead sell 91 supermarkets across France. The government has also adjusted 2026 income tax bands to account for inflation, while MPs approved a plan to guarantee free hospital parking for patients, with limited free access for visitors.
Scams remain a concern, with Enedis warning of a rise in energy-related fraud targeting consumers.
The new mediation rule for flight disputes marks a shift in how passengers resolve complaints, while expanded travel routes and updated tax brackets reflect ongoing adjustments in policy and services. With retail changes at Auchan and improved payment methods on the horizon, consumers will see both challenges and new conveniences in the months ahead.
