Why the Berlin Foxes Still Wore Their Silver Medals After Losing the Champions League Final

Wow, what a bunch of champs!

Despite losing the Champions League final to SC Magdeburg in a nail-biting 26:32 match, the whole Berlin Foxes team sported their silver medals around their necks following the award ceremony. This contrasts with many other sports, particularly football, where losing teams often swiftly remove their medals or decide not to wear them at all.

Take the 2021 Euro Football Championship for example, where England lost a thrilling penalty shootout to Italy, with the players rapidly ditching their silver medals. Only Jordan Henderson, then captain of Liverpool (now of Ajax Amsterdam), kept his around his neck. The fans did not appreciate this move, but the Berlin Foxes received applause from the stands in Cologne.

To shed light on the Berlin Foxes' decision, World Handball Player and Champions League top scorer Mathias Gidsel (135 goals) shared his insight on the matter. So, here's why the shiny silver sparkles still meant a lot to the team.

Why the Foxes are Happy with Their Silver

Gidsel explained, "Although we feel sad today, tomorrow we will be incredibly proud of this season. We didn't lose this game just because we were newcomers - we handled the pressure with ease in the past three months. We're proud of our medal because this final pitted the world's best teams against each other."

The Dane went on to add, "Earlier, people claimed we weren’t a top team. Now we’re German Champions, Supercup winners, and finalists in the Champions League. We delivered outstanding performances this year - we're on top now, and we plan to stay there. Of course, we have every reason to be proud of that."

Gidsel announced, "We're fixtures among the top teams now and will be back for this final. But first, I need a break to recharge my head and body for next year's campaign. Maybe the silver might turn into a golden medal."

It seems that showing off the silver medals represented more than just a trophy for the players—it was a symbol of their immense pride in their historic season, their unwavering sportsmanship, and their determination to comeback stronger in the future.

The Berlin Foxes' silver medals, despite losing the Champions League final, symbolize their historic season, unwavering sportsmanship, and determination for a comeback, as explained by Mathias Gidsel, the team's top scorer and World Handball Player. In contrast to other sports or football teams, who often swiftly remove their medals after losing, the Berlin Foxes have chosen to wear theirs as a continuous reminder of their achievements and commitment to the top.
