Pittsburgh Weather Update: Dry Spell Breaks August Record, Rain Forecasted for Midweek

Pittsburgh has recently experienced a significant dry spell, breaking an August record for the longest dry period in the city's recent weather history. Since June 2023, the city has been experiencing a dry spell that has lasted 14 days without measurable precipitation, making it the 95th longest on record.

Local meteorologist Ron Smiley, who has been giving weather forecasts since June 2015, has been tracking this dry spell. Before the current dry spell, the yearly rain totals were ahead of the yearly pace for rain. However, due to the current dry spell, we are now behind the yearly rain pace.

If the forecasted temperatures are correct, there could be 19 90° days for the year. The high temperature today is expected to be near or in the 90s, and high temperatures are expected to return to the 90s over the weekend. This is still well off of last year's 24 90° days, but well ahead of the average of 10 90° days.

However, there is some good news on the horizon. Pittsburgh is expected to have a cooler, dry weekend followed by rain chances returning by mid-next week. Rain chances have been isolated for Tuesday, Thursday, and scattered throughout Wednesday. Most areas should see at least a tenth of an inch of rain on Wednesday, but the weather pattern calls for scattered storms. With rain chances and frontal passage on Wednesday, high temperatures will dip into the mid to low 80s.

The forecast shows dry weather for the rest of the month, but rain chances have also been isolated for next Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. It looks like it could be a while before the current pattern of dry weather changes.

In summary, Pittsburgh recently experienced a very significant dry spell breaking an August record, but rain is forecast to return by midweek following a dry and cooler weekend. Let's hope for some much-needed rain to help replenish the city's water supply!

Weather forecasters, such as Ron Smiley, have been carefully tracking the weather-forecasting for Pittsburgh, and they predict rain for midweek, ending the prolonged dry spell that broke an August record and lasted 14 days without measurable precipitation. News of the rain forecast, while promising for replenishing the city's water supply, may also bring some dampness to the previous dry and cool weekend.
