Moscow Braces as Drone Assault Slams the Capital
In a series of unprecedented incidents, Moscow found itself under attack as a barrage of Ukrainian drones descended upon the city. The relentless airborne onslaught was confirmed by Moscow Mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, who disclosed that air defense systems successfully neutralized four of the enemy drones.
Commenting on the situation, Sobyanin added, "Emergency response teams are working diligently at the debris sites." Earlier in the day, the Mayor announced an attempted drone assault on the capital, reporting a total of ten enemy drones brought down during the early morning hours.
As two of the city's major airports – Vnukovo among them – temporarily closed their runways to ensure the safety of civil flights, the question of potential damage and casualties loomed large. Reinforcing these concerns, an unrelated drone attack on the Azot chemical plant in Novomoskovsk, a Tula region town south of Moscow, triggered a fire and injured two.
This latest drone attack joins a growing list of such strikes in recent weeks, as the military tension between Ukraine and Russia escalates. Despite ongoing peace talks, both sides continue to strengthen their air defense systems and launch strikes against each other.
US-facilitated negotiations aim to resolve the three-year-old invasion from Russia and bring a lasting peace, yet the persistent military escalation raises doubts about their effectiveness. With Ukraine pushing to bolster its air defenses against Russian attacks, the future remains uncertain.
