Burned Buildings in Basauri: A Potential Collapse and Evacuation

Fire in Basauri's Kareaga Goikoa street has left four buildings at risk of collapse. Residents of numbers 5, 1, and 7 have been forced to vacate their homes, with no immediate return in sight. The tragic incident claimed the life of one man who fell out of his window trying to escape the flames.

City officials express their deepest condolences to the deceased's family and friends. A contingent of evacuated residents is presently staying in a hotel, receiving temporary housing support.

The municipality has declared a risk of collapse for the affected buildings. Initial inspections conducted by municipal technicians and firefighters revealed that further investigation is necessary before ensuring structural safety. As the ground floor is still smoking, access has only been possible through the fire department's ladder.

To clear up any confusion, Kareaga Goikoa street's homes and land under consideration belong to private owners. Over the years, Basauri City Council has made consistent requests for the owners to maintain their properties in good shape, as they were deemed "non-compliant."

In recent decades, the issue of these rundown properties persisted due to the inaction of private landholders. As a result, Basauri's governing team chose to get creative by proposing a targeted modification of the General Urban Planning Plan (PGOU) to unite Kareaga Goikoa's execution unit with another municipal-owned plot in Uribarri. If executed, this plan would allow the sale of the dilapidated buildings at Kareaga Goikoa numbers 1, 3, 5, and 7, paving the way for urban development and construction of 94 homes in Bizkotxalde.

Throughout the day, evacuees will be allowed to retrieve their belongings in shifts. Police and firefighters will accompany and monitor them for safety reasons. Beyond temporary lodging, the Basauri Mayor is actively engaged in discussions with the Basque Government's Housing Department to find a lasting solution for the displaced residents.

Stay tuned for updates regarding the investigation of the fire's origin and the new urban development plan proposed for Kareaga Goikoa and Uribarri.
