Four Republican-led U.S. states dispatch military personnel to Washington D.C., as per Donald Trump's orders, tasking them with restoring order.

In a move aimed at reestablishing law, order, and public safety, President Donald Trump has ordered the deployment of National Guard troops to Washington D.C.[1][2][4][5]. The decision comes in response to rising crime and civil unrest in the city, with the intended purpose being to assist local police and federal law enforcement agencies in quelling civil disturbances, enforcing federal laws, and restoring a sense of safety.

Key details reveal that the Pentagon is creating specialized National Guard units that would rapidly deploy nationwide to address civil unrest and support law enforcement. A specific unit within the D.C. National Guard is being formed, with members "deputized" to enforce federal law in the nation's capital[1][2].

President Trump claims that these deployments have already made Washington D.C. safer, citing significant drops in robbery, carjacking, and violent crime since the Guard's mobilization and a federal takeover of the D.C. Metro Police Department[2][5]. However, the move is controversial and unprecedented in its scope, as the National Guard's traditional mission is to respond to extraordinary emergencies, not to serve as a routine law enforcement force policing Americans[1][2].

Critics, including legal and military experts, characterize this as a political and authoritarian move, warning that the creation of such rapid reaction forces for civil unrest risks militarizing cities and pushing legal boundaries of the Guard's role[1][3].

Notably, this is not the first time the National Guard has been deployed in a city against the will of a local governor. Previously, the Guard was deployed in Los Angeles during protests against Trump's administration's immigration policy in June 2020.

States such as Ohio, West Virginia, and South Carolina are contributing to the deployment, with Ohio sending 150 National Guard reservists, West Virginia providing around 350 National Guard members, and South Carolina planning to deploy around 200 members[1][4]. The total number of National Guard members already mobilized in Washington D.C. is 800[1][4].

The democratic mayor of Washington D.C., Muriel Bowser, has stated that violence levels in the city are at their lowest in 30 years[6]. Despite this, the administration maintains that the deployments are necessary to ensure public safety and order.
