Slashing the Ranks: The Rotating Door at Manchester United
Four Manchester United footballers have been reportedly omitted from Ruben Amorim's pre-season tour.
In a bid to make it crystal clear, Manchester United is reportedly planning to slash its ranks this summer, with four players looking at the exit door. The Red Devils have had a dismal 2024-25 season, finishing in 15th place, their worst league finish in half a century, and losing the Europa League final. Now, they're determined to offload some unwanted baggage to fund the necessary revamp for Ruben Amorim's squad.
The United Fourto Miss Out on USA Tour
According to The Mirror, Amorim has plans to leave Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Alejandro Garnacho behind when the team jets off to the USA for pre-season next month. The names on this list might not be that surprising, as three of them were dispatched on loan last season, two during Amorim's tenure, and the last one ended the season on rocky terms with the manager.
Rashford and Antony were loaned out in January to Aston Villa and Real Betis, respectively. Both players shone at their temporary clubs in the second half of the season, but loan moves haven't translated into permanent transfers yet. A move to Villa seems improbable for Rashford due to PSR concerns, and Barcelona is said to prioritize other positions. Real Betis is eager to bring Antony in permanently, but United's £40m asking price seems a stumbling block.
While there was initially a glimmer of hope for Jadon Sancho, the relationship with former Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag was marred by infamy. Sancho joined Chelsea on loan last summer, before Amorim joined the club. Despite his anonymous season at Stamford Bridge, Sancho hasn't won Amorim's favor any more than he did under Enzo Maresca. Chelsea had the option to make Sancho's move permanent, but they passed on it. Sancho is rumored to be attracting interest from Galatasaray, although that seems quite ambitious.
As for Garnacho, he voiced his frustration about being benched for most of the Europa League final, despite United trailing just before half time. Amorim publicly stated that Garnacho wouldn't have a future at the club. The 20-year-old Argentinian has been linked with potential new homes like Arsenal, Chelsea, and Napoli.
