Four journalists of Al Jazeera murdered
In the heart of Gaza City, on August 10, 2025, tragedy struck as the Israeli army carried out a lethal airstrike. The victims were four journalists working for Qatar's Al Jazeera channel: Anas Al-Sharif, Mohammed Qreiqeh, Ibrahim Zaher, and Mohammed Noufal.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) claimed that Al-Sharif, the head of a terrorist cell in Hamas, was among those killed. However, independent, credible sources such as the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and other press freedom organisations have found no evidence to support this assertion.
Al Jazeera itself reported that there is no evidence suggesting Al-Sharif took part in any hostilities. Muhammad Shehada, a writer and analyst from Gaza, echoed this sentiment, stating that there is no evidence of Al-Sharif's participation in hostilities.
Shortly before his death, Al-Sharif posted a video showing Gaza's night skies lit red by bombardment and filled with the sound of explosions. He captioned the video as "Relentless bombardment," describing the intensified Israeli aggression on Gaza City.
The journalists were killed in an attack on their tent located in front of Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. Palestinian civil defense sources claim that the Israeli army directly targeted the journalists' tent. Mohammed Abu Selmiya, director of Al-Shifa Hospital, confirmed that five Palestinians were killed in the Israeli strike, with the fifth victim's body being turned into pieces in the attack, making identification impossible.
The IDF provided documents as evidence of Al-Sharif's affiliation with Hamas, including personnel rosters, lists of terrorist training courses, phone directories, and salary documents. However, these documents have not been independently verified, and the claim of Hamas affiliation remains unsubstantiated.
Critics argue that such attacks on journalists are deliberate attempts to silence critical reporting on the Israeli occupation. Under international law, targeting journalists is considered a war crime. The CPJ and other press freedom organisations characterise these attacks as part of a broader pattern of Israeli attacks on journalists in Gaza.
This incident has sparked global outrage and calls for an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths of these four journalists. As the world watches, the search for truth continues.
