Four German Olympic Candidates Pass First Hurdle - Four German Cities Vie for 2036/40/44 Olympics
Four German cities - Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, and the Rhine-Ruhr region - are vying to host the Olympic Games. They have until the end of May 2026 to refine their concepts with the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB). A decision on the German candidate is expected in the fall of 2026.
The four cities are bidding for the Games in 2036, 2040, or 2044. They have successfully passed the first national application stage. Their concepts were evaluated in six areas, including the 'epic fan experience'. This criterion requires more than 90% of competition venues to be within a 15-minute walk of public transportation.
The candidates are now working to further develop their proposals with the DOSB. This process aims to ensure they meet the high standards set by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
The German cities are serious contenders for the Olympic Games. Their successful passage through the first national application stage demonstrates their commitment and capability. The final decision, expected in the fall of 2026, will determine which city will represent Germany in its international bid.
