Formula One driver, Sebastian Vettel, concludes his racing career in the sport

After a successful decade-long career in Formula 1, four-time World Champion Sebastian Vettel has announced his retirement from driving, effective at the end of 2022. However, the German racer is not entirely leaving the world of motorsport, as he is in early discussions to potentially take on a significant advisory role at Red Bull Racing[1].

Helmut Marko, Red Bull's motorsport advisor, has described Vettel as the ideal successor for a potential role in Formula 1[2][3][4]. Vettel, who switched to Toro Rosso and was promoted to Red Bull for the 2009 season, won four consecutive Formula 1 World Championships with Red Bull, in 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013[5].

Vettel has explicitly stated that his talks with Marko are not yet intensive or in-depth but could develop into something more substantial over time. He recognizes Marko’s irreplaceable role and hopes Marko remains in his position for a long time yet but acknowledges that eventually, the team will need to plan for succession[3].

Thus, Vettel’s current role in Formula 1 is evolving towards becoming a key advisor for Red Bull Racing, helping guide the team from behind the scenes rather than returning to the cockpit[2][3][4].

Away from Formula 1, Vettel has shown a keen interest in environmental and sustainability projects[6]. He is also a co-owner of the sailing team Germany SailGP[7]. In addition, Vettel has flirted with the idea of a possible return to racing, expressing interest in endurance racing like the World Endurance Championship, though no concrete return to racing has been announced[1].

Vettel, who has three children with his wife Hanna, has stated that his decision to leave Formula 1 is not a vote against the older drivers, but a vote for the younger ones. He believes it's good that a new generation of drivers has replaced the old in Formula 1[8].

With a total of 53 Grand Prix wins, Vettel is one of the most successful drivers in the history of Formula 1. His legacy in the sport will undoubtedly live on, whether he is behind the scenes as an advisor or pursuing new challenges in endurance racing.

Sebastian Vettel's passion for sports extends beyond Formula 1, as he has shown interest in endurance racing like the World Endurance Championship. Despite this, it seems he will be focusing on a significant advisory role at Red Bull Racing in the near future.
