McLaren Secures Historic 200th Formula 1 Win at Hungarian Grand Prix
Lando Norris' one-stop strategy played a pivotal role in McLaren's historic 200th Formula 1 victory at the 2025 Hungarian Grand Prix. The race, held on a track notorious for its difficulty in overtaking, saw Norris outsmart his teammate Oscar Piastri and several other competitors.
Starting fifth, Norris initially faced challenges with overtakes and tire wear due to his track position. However, the strategic choice of a one-stop approach, implemented mid-race by the McLaren team, proved to be a game-changer. By extending his first stint on worn tires while others made earlier pit stops, Norris managed to avoid traffic and tire degradation challenges that affected his rivals.
This strategic decision allowed Norris to maintain consistent, fast lap times without being held up by other cars, and to defend his position effectively, despite Piastri's fresher tires on a two-stop strategy. The one-stop strategy was an informed adaptation, discovered by the McLaren team while monitoring tire performance and track conditions. Andrea Stella, McLaren’s team principal, highlighted that Norris’ ability to maintain strong lap times during this extended stint gave the team confidence in pursuing the one-stop approach, which ultimately paid off.
In the final stint, Norris displayed impressive defensive driving skills, holding off Piastri's attempts to pass despite the latter's fresher tires. This victory not only intensified the intra-team title battle but was also a landmark achievement for McLaren, underscoring a significant milestone in the team's history.
Meanwhile, other teams faced their own challenges. Hamilton finished 12th in the Hungarian Grand Prix, describing himself as "absolutely useless." Nico Hülkenberg incurred a five-second penalty for a false start and finished 13th. Ferrari's race strategy for Leclerc was not thoroughly discussed beforehand, causing concerns during the race. Leclerc, who started from pole position, finished fourth, his joy from the pole position short-lived as his race performance was not as strong. He complained to the team radio that Ferrari was losing the race due to poor strategy.
Max Verstappen struggled with severe balance issues on his Red Bull throughout the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend. Despite overtaking Hamilton during the race, causing some excitement, Verstappen finished ninth, missing the podium for the fourth race in a row.
The next race is scheduled for Zandvoort at the end of August.
