Formula E's virtual racing game, dubbed "Ghost racing," offers a unique challenge to players in real-time against actual drivers. This innovative collaboration between Formula E and Virtually Live brings a thrilling experience to fans and newcomers alike, allowing them to enjoy the virtual thrill of Formula E racing.
The game, set to be released during the Formula E season 5, leverages cutting-edge technology to replicate the racetrack, cars, and drivers, sans any imperfections. Oliver Weingarten, Virtually Live's content development head, expressed admiration for the significant effort put into the game, like the accurate replication of environments and signages, to accurately depict the on-track action.
Players can participate in this scaled-down version of the race from their homes or even at the stadium, with the live race unfolding right before their eyes. In a fascinating twist, they can actively engage with the race, racing alongside the Formula E drivers on the actual track.
“Players can capture the game's best moments or highlights and share them with their friends online, while drivers themselves can create a hilarious meme by editing certain parts of the race, adding emojis, and sharing it with their followers,” explains Ben Padley, Formula E's marketing director.
The gaming experience is not just about amusement but a mission to democratize the sport. Sim-Racing allows aspiring drivers to measure their skills against professional racers, given that everyone can download and enjoy the game.
“Sim-Racing is an excellent representation of driving and offers fair competitive conditions, especially for those eager to train against real-world racers,” Padley enthused.
While the game is primarily designed for mobile and desktop platforms, it plans to extend its reach to consoles. Moreover, the online aspect of the game fosters interaction between players, allowing them to connect with friends and share clips on social media.
The concept of ghost racing is drawing attention beyond the racing circuit. Virtually Live sees immense potential for the technology beyond racing events. “We're excited by the technology's possibilities,” explained Padley, “future applications could extend to concerts or competitions.”
The potential of virtual reality technology is expanding rapidly, and Formula E is at the forefront of this revolution. “We stand as witnesses to the never-ending evolution of both content and technology,” adds Padley, “we're not standing still.”
