In an candid confession, ex-footballer Vitaly Rodionov, a former striker for the Belarus national team and BATE Borisov, spilled the beans about the Belarusian squad's secret hopes for a triumph in their friendly match against Russia.The Soviet-era camaraderie between the two nations might have subsided, but the competitive spirit remained enflamed on the football pitch.

"Every player who steps onto that field dreams of scoring a goal and winning the game", Rodionov shared with Gazeta.Ru. "Though fans may hesitate to express it, they secretly crave the same outcome. Despite Russia not being as formidable as previous opponents, the anticipation was palpable," he added.

Belarus had walked into the match with three consecutive victories under their belt, with resounding triumphs against Tajikistan (5:0) and Kazakhstan (4:1). This unbeaten streak came to an abrupt halt when the Russian contingent steamrolled over the Belarusian team with a 4:1 scoreline.

The game was dominated by Yaroslav Gладышеv who bagged a record-breaking hat-trick, with his first three goals of the match coming as early as the 34th minute. In addition to this, Gладышеv became the third player in Russian team history to score four or more goals in a single game, following in the footsteps of Oleg Salenko and Artem Dzyuba.

Vadim Pigas managed to grab a lone consolation goal for Belarus.

The spotlight was also on Gладышеv before the match, with Dynamo Moscow's veteran coach stating that trust was pivotal for Gладышеv's performance.

"Vitaly Rodionov, the former Belarusian striker, highlighted that every player longs for a goal and victory, including the fans, during the friendly match against Russia, despite Russia not being as formidable as previous opponents."
