Jerwin Ancajas Returns to U.S. Ring with Convincing Victory

Jerwin Ancajas, the former IBF super flyweight champion, made a successful comeback to the U.S. ring on August 2, 2025, defeating Uraguayan Ruben Casero by majority decision in Long Beach, California. The bout, scheduled for 8 rounds, marked Ancajas' first fight in the U.S. since 2023.

Ancajas, currently rated No. 6 by the IBF and the World Boxing Organization, No. 9 by the World Boxing Association, and No. 29 by the World Boxing Council, showcased his technical ring skills in the contest. He effectively used jabs and counterattacks to outbox Casero, who entered the ring with a record of 13-4 and 5 knockouts.

Casero, known for his inconsistent career, was outmatched in this encounter. Ancajas' victory was convincing, with two judges scoring the fight 80-72 in his favour, while one judge scored it a 76-76 draw. This win improved Ancajas' record to 37-4-2 with 24 knockouts.

The victory is significant for Ancajas' career as it positions him closer to a potential world title fight. According to Sean Gibbons, president of MP Promotions, this fight serves as a stepping stone for Ancajas to regain a shot at a world championship.

Ancajas' upcoming fight against Casero is a significant one, as it will be Casero's most elite opponent to date. While Ancajas has recently faced opponents such as veteran Richie Mepranum and Thai journeyman Sukpasried Ponphitak, Casero's most talented opposition include undefeated prospect Jorge Chavez and Rodrigo Ruiz.

Casero's most recent fight was a sixth-round stoppage against Federico Penarietta in Uruguay. Ancajas, on the other hand, last fought in the U.S. against Wilner Sotto in 2023, winning by a fifth round technical knockout.

The fight between Ancajas and Casero is scheduled for Aug. 3, 2025, at the Thunder Studios in Long Beach, California. With this victory, Ancajas continues his pursuit of another world title in the super bantamweight division, where Japanese superstar Naoya Inoue currently holds all the belts.
