Former Uruguayan Vice President Appointed as Ambassador to UNESCO

Uruguay's Foreign Minister, Mario Lubetkin, announced on May 29 the appointment of Beatriz Argimon as the country's new ambassador to UNESCO. Abram Bernardo Greiver will be the ambassador to Spain, according to the list of new ambassadors appointed by the government led by Yamandú Orsi.

Argimon, a professional writer and former member of the opposition National Party, served as the first woman to preside over this political force. In 2019, she was appointed as the running mate of Luis Lacalle Pou for the presidential and parliamentary elections held in October of that year. With the victory of the National Party, Argimon became Uruguay's first elected vice president, serving from March 1, 2020, to March 1, 2025.

The Foreign Minister highlighted that the new list of ambassadors included a balance of six men and six women, with eight career professionals and four political appointments. He celebrated the improved gender and African representation in the appointments, as previously announced on March 14.

The newly appointed ambassadors include José Luis Cancela (Costa Rica), Alejandra Acosta (El Salvador), Mario Silva Castro (Ethiopia), Patricia Benitez (Finland), Luis Iribarne (Greece), Alfredo Bogliaccini (Italy), Marcelo Blanco (Paraguay), Silvana Mones de Oca (Peru), Carolina Ache Batlle (Portugal), and Rosario Portell (Russia).

Upon the appointment, the Executive Power will submit the request for approval to the Chamber of Senators for a vote.
