Ahead of His Transfer to Newcastle, Ex-Schalke Player Thiaw Prepares for His Move - Former Schalke star Thiaw relocates to Newcastle
Newcastle United have announced the signing of Malick Thiaw from AC Milan, with the German international defender set to bolster the Magpies' defense ahead of the 2025/26 season.
Thiaw, a former German international, has signed a long-term contract with Newcastle and will wear shirt number 12. The deal was confirmed on August 12, with Newcastle paying around €40 million for the 24-year-old defender.
Thiaw joins Newcastle after three seasons at AC Milan, where he made 85 appearances in all competitions and scored one goal—a notable opener in a 3-1 away victory against Real Madrid last season.
Eddie Howe, Newcastle's head coach, expressed his enthusiasm about the addition of Thiaw to the squad. "Malick brings a wealth of experience from the Bundesliga, Serie A, and Champions League, which will be invaluable as we return to European competition," he said.
Thiaw began his professional career at Schalke 04 in Germany before moving to Milan in 2022 for a €5 million transfer. Despite links to Real Madrid and Bayern Munich last summer, he chose to join Newcastle this summer to strengthen their defense alongside Sven Botman, Fabian Schär, Dan Burn, and Jamaal Lascelles.
The transfer fee reported was roughly £30 million (€35 million) plus £4.3 million in add-ons, reflecting a serious investment from Newcastle in strengthening their center-back options.
In addition, Schalke 04, Thiaw's former club, will reportedly benefit from a sell-on clause in the transfer.
Thiaw is expected to be an important defensive asset for Newcastle in both the Premier League and Europe in the coming season. The Magpies are looking forward to a promising campaign with the addition of the experienced defender.
The signing of Malick Thiaw by Newcastle United has shown their commitment to strengthening the team, particularly the defense, with a transfer fee of approximately €40 million. With Thiaw's experience in European leagues, including the Premier League, he is poised to make a significant impact on the pitch, especially in sports like football.
