Former Saint Paulian athlete put up for sale at $80 million
Viktor Gyökeres on the Auction Block: Arsenal Pursues Sweden's Striker with a Hefty Bid
Get ready to witness a bidding war! The legendary Swedish striker, Viktor Gyökeres, who once graced FC St. Pauli with his goal-scoring prowess, is now on the market—at a steep discount, but still, it's a hefty price tag.
His Instagram account bursts with lavish success stories, like his latest post triumphantly flaunting the Portuguese cup snatched from the catacombs, following his impressive final showdown against Benfica for Sporting Lisbon. With 39 of the 88 season goals for Sporting credited to him, it's no wonder the European soccer scene is abuzz with half the continent chasing this skilled striker, celebrating his 27th birthday this Wednesday!
With a current contract with Sporting that runs for another three years and a €100 million release clause, the Portuguese have purportedly shown signs of compromise, hinting at accepting €80 million. According to "The Guardian," Arsenal is reportedly putting forth an all-out effort to scrape together the necessary funds—equivalent to approximately £67 million—and is considering a formal offer.
Remember, Gyökeres has a connection with the island, having been enticed to it as a 20-year-old. A temporary loan from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2019 brought him to FC St. Pauli, where he scored seven goals in 26 games, including the game-winning 1-0 against 1. FC Nürnberg in May 2020. Ironically, he spent 90 minutes on the bench for both derby matches against HSV.
This week's MOPO—available wherever newspapers are sold!—offers insights on various topics, including the fierce battle between public and private appointments, the failed system in the Main Station Attack, frustrated mothers protesting endless waiting times for parental allowance, the cycling boom on main axes, and a large puzzle supplement for daily enjoyment.
After a year, the Millerntor adventure ended, and Gyökeres was loaned out to Swansea before eventually being sold to Coventry, where he made a breakthrough. In 2023, Sporting Lisbon bought him for around €25 million and earned two championships with him.
