In a recent analysis, Saïd Ennjimi, a former international referee, has expressed doubts about the penalty decision awarded to Real Madrid against Olympique Marseille during their match.

The controversial penalty was given due to a handball by Facundo Medina in the box, with the Bosnian referee Irfan Peljto making the initial call. However, Ennjimi noted that there was an increase in the surface of Medina's body with his arm during the incident, which he believes may have been a natural movement while tackling.

According to the rule, a handball occurs when a defender artificially increases the surface covered by his body. But Ennjimi argues that in this specific case, the interpretation of the rule may have been subjective. He believes that too many penalties are being awarded for players who are tackling, and this decision goes against the natural position of a player who is tackling normally.

Ennjimi's comments suggest that the VAR did not call the referee back because they were in a gray zone. He stated that if the referee had not blown the whistle, the VAR would not have called him back. This implies that the penalty decision is subjective and open to interpretation.

The former referee also stated that the decision to award the penalty was "extremely severe." He believes that the increase in surface was due to Medina's natural movement while tackling, and a player's natural movement while tackling should not be considered increasing the surface area of the body.

Ennjimi's statement implies that the penalty decision is not a clear error, but rather a subjective one. He believes that the VAR should have reviewed the handball incident, but in this case, they did not.

The penalty was awarded in a match that ended 2-1, with Real Madrid emerging as the winners. Despite the controversy surrounding the penalty decision, it is clear that Ennjimi's analysis has raised questions about the interpretation of the handball rule and the subjectivity involved in penalty decisions.
