Former NFL Quarterback Danny Kanell Supports Tim Tebow's Baseball Ambitions

Danny Kanell, a current ESPN college football analyst and co-host of ESPN Radio's Russillo and Kanell, has commended Tim Tebow's decision to pursue a career in baseball. This support comes as Tebow, a Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback at the University of Florida, prepares to work out for scouts from up to 20 major league teams in Los Angeles.

Tebow's baseball aspirations are not without challenge. Having last played organized baseball in high school, his first at-bat in professional baseball may present a significant hurdle due to the game's nuances. However, Kanell, a former Florida State QB standout and six-year NFL veteran, believes Tebow has a better chance than most would give him to succeed in baseball.

Kanell's own foray into baseball was in 2001 when he joined the Newark Bears of the independent Atlantic League. At the time, he was 27, having last played baseball as a college sophomore. His teammates included former major leaguers Pete Incaviglia, Jack Armstrong, and Hensley Meulens.

Kanell's performance on the Newark Bears helped him win over the locker room. His age and baseball experience were not deterrents, as he played third base and first base for the team. In fact, his 25 games with the Bears saw him hit .237 with one home run and six RBIs.

Interestingly, Kanell was drafted in the 19th round of the 1992 MLB draft by the Milwaukee Brewers and in the 25th round by the New York Yankees. However, his most memorable game was against ex-big league closer Mitch "Wild Thing" Williams, where he went 0-for-3.

The New York Mets and the Los Angeles Angels have announced that they want to try out Tebow in their spring training. Whether Tebow will emulate Kanell's success remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: Tebow's baseball journey is about to begin, and with Kanell's support, he is ready to face the challenges that come his way.

Kanell considers his time with the Newark Bears as successful and believes that Tebow, with his exceptional athleticism, has a good chance of making it in the world of baseball. As Tebow prepares for his workouts, he can draw inspiration from Kanell's journey and the belief that he, too, can defy the odds.
