Barack Obama, the 44th President of the United States, has spoken out about the role of the presidency and the current political climate. In a series of remarks, Obama emphasised that the role of the presidency is to unify, not stoke division.

During his tenure, Obama stressed that extremist views were not embraced, empowered, or given the weight of the United States government. He believes that at moments of high tension, the president's role is to pull people together.

The former President did not comment on specific incidents of violence, such as the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk or the shooting of Democratic Minnesota state legislators Melissa Hortman and John Hoffman. However, he found both incidents 'horrific' and 'a tragedy.'

Obama's comments were directed at what he sees as the Trump administration's desire to target political enemies. He criticized the use of terms like 'vermin' and 'enemies who need to be targeted' by current and former aides of the current president.

The former President did not mention the names of any specific political opponents who have been called with such derogatory terms. He stressed that Americans must be able to disagree and push back against ideas they don't ascribe to, while respecting the right of others to hold those opinions.

Obama was not the only former president to hold similar beliefs about the presidency's role. He mentioned that former Presidents George W. Bush, John McCain, and Mitt Romney also shared these views.

In a show of support, Obama praised Utah GOP Gov. Spencer Cox's handling of the aftermath of Kirk's murder. He also expressed his condolences to Kirk's family, stating that what happened to him was a tragedy.

Obama's belief about the role of the presidency was not a Democratic or Republican value, but an American value, he said. His comments underscore the need for a more unifying and respectful political discourse in the United States.
