In a surprising turn of events, the Free Voters of Bavaria have nominated Michael Piazolo as their candidate for the upcoming Munich mayoral election in March 2026. Piazolo, a seasoned politician with a background in education and culture, is well-positioned to make a strong impact in the race.
Currently, the Free Voters are in a factional community with the CSU in the town hall. Piazolo, as a prominent figure within the Free Voters, aims to build on this alliance to create a new dynamism for Munich. His nomination is seen as an effort to strengthen the Free Voters' presence in the city council.
Piazolo, a resident of Munich, has served as a member of the Bavarian State Parliament since 2008, representing Munich South. However, he has decided against holding both the state parliament and city council positions simultaneously. However, realistically, there's little chance of Piazolo making it into the top three in the mayoral election. The Free Voters secured only 1.2 percent in Munich for the federal election, and their starting position is "not entirely simple."
Despite this, Piazolo's nomination as the mayoral candidate has made the Free Voters more visible in Munich. If the party can improve their citywide result from the 2.5 percent they achieved in the last city council election, Piazolo could consider it a success.
It remains to be seen whether Piazolo will resign from his state parliament seat to focus solely on his mayoral campaign. For now, he continues to serve as the Bavarian Minister of Education and Culture, a role he has held since November 2018.
