Former mayor in Chai Nat jailed for five years

In a landmark ruling at the Saraburi Provincial Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct Region 1, the former mayor of Chai Nat province, Traisak Patamaratjiranon, has been sentenced to five years in prison. The sentencing stems from Traisak's corruption charges, which involved the misuse of municipal resources. The heart of the corruption was in Chai Nat province, where the misuse of resources was found at the 'Mayor's Kaffir Lime Garden'. Contrary to Traisak's claims, the 'Mayor's Kaffir Lime Garden' was not a free community project open to the public. Instead, it was presented as a public learning center promoting sustainable agriculture, but evidence showed it was run as a private venture. The garden also operated as a private learning center and charged for seminar services, meals, maintenance fees, and the sale of plant seedlings. The misuse of resources at the 'Mayor's Kaffir Lime Garden' contributed to Traisak's personal and political gain. The court concluded that Traisak's actions at the garden constituted abuse of office. Traisak regularly directed municipal employees to work at his private farm multiple times per week, and equipment belonging to the municipality was used at his personal property, Patamaratjiranon Farm, and at the 'Mayor's Kaffir Lime Garden'. The garden, located in Chai Nat province, was also used to gain political popularity in the area. The misuse of resources included using municipal workers and equipment, such as water pumps and grass-cutting machines. The role of the judge in the court ruling concerning Traisak Patamaratjiranon regarding corruption and misuse of municipal resources was held by the presiding judge of the respective Thai court handling the case. The sentencing is a significant step towards accountability and the proper use of public resources.
