Amit Patel, a former employee of the Jacksonville Jaguars, found himself in hot water for allegedly swiping over $22 million from the team over a span of four years. His court documents, submitted this week to the U.S. District Court, highlight the suspicious transactions that led to his legal troubles.

Alex King, Patel's lawyer, spoke to CNN on Thursday, admitting that his client is "deeply remorseful" and "apologetic for his actions." King indicated that Patel had become a "victim of his gambling addiction," resulting in a substantial chunk of the misappropriated funds being squandered on online sports gambling.

King disclosed that the bulk of Patel's gambling expenditures had gone towards placing wagers on football betting platforms. He added that the losses in the last few months preceding the NFL investigation were particularly substantial.

In the aftermath of his dismissal from the Jaguars in early 2023, Patel reportedly enrolled himself in a rehabilitation center to tackle his gambling addiction. King noted that despite Patel's marijuana dependency not framing his misdeeds, it is essential to understand that gambling addiction shares some similarities with drug addiction. Both stimulate the brain's dopamine reaction in the same manner, triggering an uncontrollable urge to gamble and increasing risks despite the consequences.

Amit Patel had almost spent the entirety of the funds he embezzled through the Jaguars virtual credit card system (VCC) on gambling websites. He felt compelled to recoup his losses and use the stolen funds to cover his significant gambling debts. However, his gambling addiction further complicated the situation, leading to additional funds being misappropriated to cover his considerable sports betting losses.

According to court documents, Patel had used the stolen funds to finance online gambling, pay for personal vacations, accommodation, and sporting tickets for himself and his friends, buy a new Tesla and a Nissan pickup truck, invest in cryptocurrency, and purchase property in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. He even purchased a Patek Philippe Nautilus watch worth over $95,000 and paid the entire amount with the proceeds of his deceptive scheme.

However, King has refuted these allegations, claiming that Patel's lifestyle was legal and the modest accommodations were primarily funded by family and other income sources. Patel had also purchased a Tesla Model 3 and later sold it to upgrade his vehicle. King concluded that Patel had not used the Jaguars VCC to fund his lifestyle but was, in fact, attempting to recoup his losses from earlier gambling debts, where the Jaguars' VCC program had inadvertently been utilized.

Although Patel forfeited his right to a trial, the case will proceed based on sworn declarations submitted to the U.S. Attorney's Office.
